Communication is a human right!
Melissa Stone, AT-ACP
parent and spellers method provider
It was not until the summer of 2019 that we were introduced to spelling as a form of communication. From that moment on, we knew that life would be different. We knew that we would get to hear our son's voice.
When we saw our son spell for the first time, I knew that I couldn't keep this gift to ourselves. I began to train with the International Association of Spelling as Communication (I-ASC) and sought further training to work with complex cases in The Spellers Method, working to coach spellers and their family how to support their communication.
I am the founder and owner of Body Brain Connection in Chandler, AZ, a spelling clinic. I am also a co-founder for Arizona Spellersā Academy in Tempe, AZ. I work with families from around the country with the Spellers Method, an organization geared toward empowering spellers with a variety of resources including immersion programs and an 8 week CP (Communication Partner) training course. I have loved the opportunity to be poured into by the founders of the Spellers Method, Dawnmarie Gaivin and Dana Johnson, two experienced spelling practitioners.
Rachael Miklos
Practitioner - I-ASC, COTA/L
My name is Rachael Miklos. I have been an Occupational Therapy Assistant since December 1995. I have an amazing husband of 24 years. And 2 of the sweetest rescue pups that get me going everyday. I have a strong passion to help our community of non speaking and unreliable speaking people. Little did I know that my years of experience helping people with sensory regulation and purposeful movement would lead me down this exhilarating journey of spelling to communicate. So excited to join this team of practitioners!
What is spelled communication?
The Spellers Method is a multi-disciplinary approach utilizing Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC) that teaches non-speakers, minimal and unreliable speakers how to communicate by developing gross and fine motor skills to point to letters on a letter board. We collaborate with occupational therapists, developmental optometry and music therapists to create a well rounded program in accessing the appropriate motor supports.
In the beginning of acquiring skill, a student is learning the motor movements to accurately point to letters on the alphabet broken into 3 boards. Once the student has achieved accuracy on 3 stencil boards with the guidance of a practitioner, they move up to 26 letters on a stencil board. Using a continuum of prompting, the student transitions to fluency, communicating with more than one communication partner and entering the application phase.
Parent involvement is key to implementing a successful spelling program. Your loved one will make a greater abundance of progress as you learn this dance of communication. You will be guided to be an effective communication and regulation partner by a trained practitioner.
